I found that some birds wade in shallow water, while others feed on the rocky shoreline. The wading birds mostly have long legs and bills which enable them look for food in deeper waters.

It is amazing to watch them use there long legs that help them balance steadily in sand and mud. I photgraphed a couple of wading birds on Saturday morning just gone which include, Black tailed godwit, Dunlin and Redshank.

See below video I shot in a 100 frames per second to help slow down there movement, as these guys move very fast when feeding.

Video of Wading Birds on The Boyne River.

I decided to target the Redshank as there was a large flock feeding along the river channel of the Boyne river estuary at Drogheda in County Louth. It can be hard to get a decent-sized image of a wading bird as usually the first sight of a human and there gone!!

The redshank are small, so you have to get really close to them to get a decent picture. I recently purchased a Ghillie Blanket from Tragopan and wanted to see how effective it would be to camouflage me from the wading birds. Having scared off the birds on my arrival and while setting up the camera gear. After lying down and covering myself and the camera with the Ghillie Blanket, I would say within about 30 minutes the birds started coming closer and closer.

I was really happy with the photos I got and I am looking forward to photographing some more of the shore birds next weekend, that’s if the light is good enough!

I purchased one from the local hardware store and some 3/4” ply wood for supporting the tray underneath. I picked up some mossy tree branches for perches and used some clippings from plants in the garden.

Below are a couple of the photos that I have taken so far and hopefully as I use the reflection pool more will get better with the staging of the photos.

I brought home a nice mossy tree branch that I picked up from a walk I had earlier in the week along the Boyne River in my local area in Drogheda.

It wasn’t long before I had the birds coming to the feeders and the Sparrows started to perch on the mossy tree branch. After about an hour I realised that the tree branch was maybe a little too thick for the Blue Tits to perch on. I decided to add some bird feed on top of the mossy part of the tree branch to entice the Blue Tits to perch.

It didn’t take long before they landed and posed for a photograph. In post processing I knew all I had to do to get rid of the food from the tree branch was to bring it into Photoshop and use the spot healing brush and it would be like it was never there.

The Christmas Lights feature not only in the town itself but also along the Boyne River at Scotch Hall and D-hotel.

I was after a couple of reflection shots along the river to reflect the Christmas lights, so timing was everything. I decided that low tide was the best time as the water would be more calm then and this would help with the reflections in the water.
